Frequently Asked Questions
What does a dermatopathologist do?
A dermatopathologist specializes in diagnosing skin diseases by examining tissue samples under a microscope. They play a critical role in identifying conditions such as skin cancer, inflammatory skin diseases, and complex dermatologic disorders.
How is dermatopathology used in skin cancer diagnosis?
Dermatopathology is essential for confirming skin cancer diagnoses. After a biopsy is performed, the dermatopathologist analyzes the tissue to determine whether cancer is present and what type it is, which guides treatment decisions.
What makes Dr. Wilentz’s background unique?
Dr. Wilentz combines extensive training from leading institutions like Harvard and Johns Hopkins with deep expertise in both dermatopathology and gastrointestinal pathology, along with academic research and teaching experience.
Do patients see a dermatopathologist directly?
Most patients do not interact directly with a dermatopathologist. Instead, they work behind the scenes with dermatologists and other physicians to provide accurate diagnoses that guide patient care.
