Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mohs surgery and is it right for me?
Mohs micrographic surgery is the gold standard for treating many common skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. During the procedure, Dr. Russo removes the cancer layer by layer, examining each layer under a microscope until all cancer cells are cleared. This technique offers the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible — making it ideal for cancers on the face, neck, hands, and other cosmetically sensitive areas. Dr. Russo will evaluate your specific case and walk you through whether Mohs is the right approach for you.
What happens after Mohs surgery — will I need reconstruction?
After the cancer is fully removed, Dr. Russo will discuss the best options for closing and repairing the surgical site. Depending on the size and location of the wound, this may involve a simple closure, a skin flap, or a graft. Dr. Russo has advanced fellowship training in reconstructive techniques and places a strong emphasis on achieving the best possible aesthetic outcome alongside a complete surgical cure.
How do I know if a mole or spot needs to be evaluated?
Any mole or spot that is new, changing in size, shape, or color, bleeding, or simply looks different from others on your body should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Dr. Russo recommends annual full-body skin exams for all patients — especially those with a history of significant sun exposure, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles. Early detection is the most important factor in successful skin cancer treatment.
Does Dr. Russo see patients for general dermatology in addition to surgery?
Yes. While Dr. Russo has a particular focus on surgical dermatology and Mohs surgery, she is a board-certified dermatologist who provides comprehensive dermatologic care. She takes pride in building long-term relationships with her patients and is committed to addressing each patient’s concerns thoroughly, whether surgical or medical in nature.
