Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mohs surgery and does Dr. Beirne perform it?
Mohs micrographic surgery is the gold standard treatment for many common skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. During the procedure, Dr. Beirne removes the cancer layer by layer, examining each layer under a microscope until all cancer cells are cleared. This technique offers the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible — making it especially ideal for cancers on cosmetically sensitive areas like the face and neck. Mohs surgery is one of Dr. Beirne’s primary clinical interests and areas of expertise.
How does Dr. Beirne approach reconstructive surgery after skin cancer removal?
Dr. Beirne combines her surgical precision with an artistic sensibility to achieve the best possible aesthetic outcomes following skin cancer removal. She carefully evaluates each patient’s unique anatomy and skin to determine the most appropriate reconstructive approach, whether that involves a simple closure, a skin flap, or a graft. Her background in both wound healing research and fine art informs her commitment to results that are not only medically sound but aesthetically excellent.
What should I expect during a skin cancer screening with Dr. Beirne?
A skin cancer screening with Dr. Beirne involves a thorough full-body skin exam to evaluate moles, spots, and lesions for any signs of concern. She is trained to identify early warning signs of skin cancer and will walk you through any findings in a clear, compassionate way. Annual screenings are recommended for all patients — especially those with a history of significant sun exposure, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles. Early detection is the most important factor in successful treatment.
Does Dr. Beirne see patients for general dermatology in addition to surgery?
Yes. While Dr. Beirne has a particular focus on dermatologic surgery and Mohs micrographic surgery, she is a board-certified dermatologist who provides comprehensive dermatologic care. Trained at one of the top dermatology programs in the country at the University of Miami, she brings a high level of clinical expertise to every patient visit, whether surgical or medical in nature.
