Dermabrasion is a procedure that removes the top layers of skin to improve facial skin scarred by accidents or previous surgeries, deep acne scars, and fine facial wrinkles. Usually performed in a physician’s office with local anesthetic, a tool with a wire brush or a diamond wheel that rotates rapidly is used to smooth out and level surface irregularities.

Treatment areas are usually the face, but the procedure can be used on most areas of the skin. The duration and depth of the dermabrasion depends on the treatment required and desired results. The dermabrasion process injures or wounds the skin, causing it to bleed. Then, as the skin heals, new, fresh skin replaces the skin that was affected during the procedure. Most patients see a significant improvement, attaining the desired results in about 6-12 weeks.
